THE DETAILS, IN PLAIN WORDS
Privacy Policy
What stays on your computer, what AI features may send, and the choices you have.

01Who we are
Butter Edit is operated by Andre Aing, based in France (the data controller, “we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy covers butteredit.com, support, and the Butter Edit desktop app and related services.
For privacy questions or to exercise your rights, use our contact form and select “Privacy or data request.”
02Information we handle
- Desktop accounts: your email, account identifier, basic sign-in profile such as a display name, authentication/session information, plan status, and AI allowance and usage records. The app uses Supabase for account services and offers email or Google sign-in.
- Your projects: source video and audio, transcripts, edits, saved styles, and project conversations are handled on your computer. The app does not automatically sync source media or project files to cloud storage.
- AI requests: when you use AI features, prompts, relevant transcript and project context, selected video frames, and generated responses may be processed by the AI service and its providers. Service requests may also include account and usage information needed to authorize and operate the feature.
- Support: the contact page prepares an email draft locally in your browser. It does not submit or save the form contents on our server. If you send the draft through your email service, we receive your sender address, optional name, subject, message, and any other information you choose to include. A support request does not subscribe you to marketing.
- Technical delivery: hosting, authentication, and email providers may process connection information such as IP addresses, request times, browser information, and security logs.
03Local files and AI processing
Transcription runs on your device. Source media and project files stay on your computer unless you separately choose to share them. Downloads of transcription models and other resources still require a network connection.
Local storage does not mean every feature is offline. Butter AI may send prompts, transcript context, project information, and selected frames through the hosted AI service to its model providers. Those requests can contain personal information present in your footage or prompts.
If you connect your own agent through MCP, that agent can access project information and make edits within the permissions you grant. The agent may send information to its own provider. Review that provider’s terms, retention settings, and privacy policy. The local MCP connection does not make the external agent’s processing local.
Provider retention and model-training practices depend on the service and its applicable terms. We do not promise that third-party AI requests are never retained or used for training. Choose the features and providers that fit the sensitivity of your work.
04Why we use information
We use information to operate accounts and requested editing features, answer support and privacy requests, administer plan access and AI usage, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.
Where the GDPR applies, our bases are performing a contract or taking requested steps before a contract for accounts, editing services, and related support; legitimate interests for proportionate service security and handling general enquiries; and legal obligations where applicable.
We do not sell your personal information or subscribe you to marketing through support enquiries. The contact page opens your email app or lets you copy the draft to your clipboard. You choose whether to send it.
05Providers and transfers
Information is shared with providers only as needed to deliver the relevant service: website and email hosting, Supabase for desktop accounts, and AI infrastructure and model providers for AI features. The contact page does not use an email-delivery API. If you send a support email, your email provider and our inbox provider process it under their applicable policies.
We may disclose information when legally required, to protect rights and service security, or in connection with a business transfer subject to applicable privacy protections. Connected agents and the sign-in provider you select also process data under their own policies.
Providers may operate outside France or the European Economic Area. Where required, international transfers must be covered by an applicable adequacy decision or appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses. Contact us to ask about the providers and safeguards relevant to your use.
06Storage and retention
- Local media and projects: remain on your device until you remove them. Uninstalling the app or deleting an account does not necessarily delete files saved elsewhere on your computer.
- Account and usage information: is kept while needed to provide your account and manage access. Following a deletion request, information no longer needed is removed, subject to proportionate security, legal, or dispute-related retention.
- Support messages: are kept while your request is being handled and normally for up to 12 months after resolution, unless a legal obligation or an ongoing dispute requires longer retention.
- AI provider records: are subject to the provider’s applicable retention practices. Locally saved conversations and edits are separate from provider-side records.
We use reasonable safeguards for information under our control. Keep your device protected and maintain backups; local project files are not a cloud backup service.
07Cookies and tracking
The current landing page does not include advertising pixels or an analytics tracking SDK. Its support form does not require marketing cookies. Hosting and security infrastructure may still keep operational request logs.
The desktop app uses local settings and authentication storage needed for its operation. If we introduce non-essential tracking on the website, we will explain it and obtain consent where required before enabling it.
08Your choices and rights
Depending on applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of personal information, object to processing, and withdraw consent. Use the contact page with the privacy topic, then send the prepared email. We may need proportionate information to verify your identity and will respond within applicable legal deadlines.
You can manage local files yourself, stop using AI features, disconnect an external agent, or request deletion of your online account. Deleting online information does not automatically remove files or third-party copies you control.
You may complain to your local data protection authority. In France, this is the CNIL. You do not have to contact us first to exercise that right.
09Children and policy updates
Butter Edit is not directed to children under 16. If you believe a child has submitted personal information without the required authorization, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
We will update this policy when our practices change, with the date shown above. Material changes will be communicated as required by law. New uses requiring consent will not rely only on a change to this page.
