THE DETAILS, IN PLAIN WORDS

Terms of Service

The terms for using Butter Edit, with clear responsibilities for your content and your editing decisions.

Last updated:

01About these terms

These terms cover butteredit.com and the Butter Edit desktop video editor and related services (“Butter Edit”). The operator is Andre Aing, based in France. Contact us through the support form.

By using Butter Edit, you agree to these terms to the extent an agreement is validly formed under applicable law. You must be at least 16 and able to enter this agreement; if local law requires a parent or guardian’s authorization, obtain it before use.

Butter Edit lets you edit your own footage through a transcript or timeline, ask Butter AI to make edits, or connect a supported external agent. Availability, supported systems, and features can vary by release.

02Your videos, prompts, and outputs

You are responsible for the media you import, the prompts and instructions you submit, the edits you request or accept, and the videos or other material you export or publish. This includes work created with Butter AI or an external agent.

You must have the rights, permissions, and lawful basis needed to use the footage, music, voices, likenesses, personal information, graphics, and other material in your projects. Review your finished work for accuracy, consent, copyright, privacy, and other legal requirements before sharing it.

You retain your rights in your content. You grant only the permissions needed for us and our service providers to process information you choose to submit to a requested feature or support request. These terms do not transfer ownership of your original footage to us or grant a general right to publish it.

Butter Edit is an editing tool. We do not endorse your media, prompts, or outputs, and do not act as the publisher of videos you choose to distribute. Responsibility for your own actions is separate from any responsibility the law places on us.

03Acceptable use

Use Butter Edit lawfully and respect other people’s rights. Do not use the service to:

  • Create or distribute illegal material, infringe intellectual property or privacy rights, or use a person’s likeness or voice unlawfully.
  • Create child sexual abuse material, non-consensual intimate material, fraudulent content, or unlawful impersonations.
  • Access another person’s account or files without permission, attack our services, introduce malware, or evade authentication, plan restrictions, or AI usage limits.

Supported automation and MCP agent connections are allowed within your plan and granted permissions. If we reasonably identify abuse or a legal/security risk, we may restrict the affected online features or account, with notice and an opportunity to address the issue where appropriate. Contact support if you believe a restriction is mistaken.

04AI results and your review

AI can misunderstand instructions, make unsuitable cuts, produce inaccurate captions, or generate material that is incorrect, similar to other material, or unsuitable for your purpose. AI suggestions are a starting point; you remain responsible for reviewing edits and exports.

We do not promise a particular editing result, originality, audience response, income, or time saving. Illustrative comparisons on the website use stated assumptions and are not measured performance guarantees.

Edits are designed to remain reversible and to leave source files untouched. Keep separate backups of important media and projects. Undo history and autosave are useful features, not a guarantee against all loss or corruption.

05Accounts and connected agents

Provide accurate account information and protect your sign-in methods. You are responsible for activities you authorize through your account. Let support know promptly if you suspect unauthorized access.

If you connect Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, or another supported agent, you authorize that agent to access and edit projects within the connection’s permissions. You control the instructions and access you grant. The agent provider’s terms, privacy practices, and charges apply separately.

Butter Edit does not control the external provider’s full workflow, availability, or model behavior. A local MCP connection does not guarantee that the agent keeps information on your device.

06Plans and billing

Downloading the installer does not begin a subscription. The desktop app presents the available plans and trial setup before checkout.

If you choose a paid plan, the price, billing period, included usage, any renewal terms, cancellation method, and applicable refund conditions must be shown before you complete the purchase. Your external agent’s subscription or provider usage is separate from Butter Edit’s price.

You can contact support about billing or cancellation. We will not use these terms to remove any withdrawal, refund, conformity, or other consumer rights that applicable law gives you. Future pricing changes will be communicated as required and will not retroactively change a completed purchase period.

07Privacy and third-party services

Our Privacy Policy describes how local projects, accounts, AI requests, and support information are handled. Do not submit material you are not authorized to disclose to the relevant feature or provider.

Butter Edit relies on third-party components and services, including account, hosting, model, and email providers. Their availability and applicable terms may affect the features you use. Open-source components remain subject to their own licenses; these terms do not remove rights granted by those licenses.

The Butter Edit brand, original interface, website materials, and other protected elements belong to their respective rights holders. Your right to use the product does not grant ownership of those elements.

08Availability and responsibility

We aim to provide a useful, reliable editor, but do not promise uninterrupted access, compatibility with every file or device, or error-free AI results. Any service commitments required by applicable law still apply.

To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for losses caused by unlawful or unauthorized content you submit or publish, your failure to obtain necessary rights, or instructions you independently give to an external agent. We do not accept responsibility for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, where the law allows their exclusion.

These provisions do not exclude or limit responsibility that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. In particular, they do not remove mandatory consumer remedies or liability for fraud, intentional wrongdoing, gross negligence, or death or personal injury where the law prevents exclusion. Nothing makes you responsible for our own unlawful conduct.

09Ending use and changes

You may stop using Butter Edit and request account deletion through support. Local projects and exports remain under your control. Before deleting files or uninstalling, save anything you want to keep. Any paid cancellation or refund rights are governed by your purchase terms and applicable law.

We may update these terms for changes to the product, services, or law. The revised date will appear above, and material changes will be notified as required. Updates do not remove rights already acquired under a valid purchase.

10Applicable law and contact

French law governs these terms, subject to mandatory protections that apply to you, including protections in your country of habitual residence where applicable. These terms do not prevent you from using courts or complaint procedures available to you under mandatory law.

If you have a question, a content-rights report, or a dispute, use the contact form. For a rights report, identify the affected material, the rights at issue, and how we can follow up. We will review information relevant to services under our control.
